STIC, the New DELPHI Very Forward Electromagnetic Calorimeter

The new DELPHI (CERN, LEP collider) very forward electromagnetic calorimeter STIC Small angle TIle Calorimeter) serving as a luminosity monitor is described. The results from extensive test beam measurements as well as performance during 1994 LEP run are presented. The energy resolution of 13.5\%/$\sqrt{E~}\oplus$1.5\% and resolution of 250~$\mu$m in radial shower position measurements at the edge between two towers for 45~GeV electrons are achieved. The calorimeter is equipped with: a) silicon shower maximum detectors to improve the accuracy in the determination of the showering particle direction; b) veto system composed of two scintillator layers to provide $e-\gamma$ separation and to trigger the single photon events.
