Attaining Square-Wave Stochastic Slow Extraction Spills from the U-70 Synchrotron

The paper outlines a technique to attain square-wave (flat-topped, with a pronounced
DC-content and a low AC-ripple) extraction spills under a noise (stochastic) slow extraction
of intermediate-energy beam at the magnetic-field flat-bottom in the U-70 synchrotron of SRC IHEP
of RNC «Kurchatov institute». To this end, a dedicated beam feedback circuit has been developed and
is employed now. The specific feature of the circuit is the object under control — a circulating beam
diffusing in transverse (horizontal) direction, which does not constitute a linear invariant-in-time system.
The functional block diagram and the tuning procedure of the feedback are reported. The list of technical
parameters is specified and a brief description of its engineering implementation is given. Results of the
successful commissioning of the system in question with a carbon-nuclei beam in the U-70 machine are presented.
