Following Heisenberg it is assumed that the stability of the nucleus can be ascribed to attractive forces overcoming the mutual repulsive forces of nuclear protons. They may be divided up into attractions between protons and neutrons and between neutrons and neutrons. It is assumed that normally the former of these is the more important. In heavy nuclei the repulsive forces tend to become large compared with the attractive forces. The author develops the mathematical theory of such a nucleus, a statistical method being used for this purpose. (Science Abstracts, 1933, 2923. J. E. R. C.).
