Calculational Study of Characteristics of the Radiaion Monitor Prototype for Transport Registration of Radioactive Substances by Moving Vehicles

The radiation monitor based on the polystyrene molded scintillator SC_IHEP-301 (200x100x5 cm3) with wave-length shifting fiber light-collector has been described. The monitor is intended for the registration of illegal transport of radioactive substances at thoroughfares. The calculational study of sensitivity have been performed for different positions of the 60Co source relative to the monitor centre and good enough agreement with experiment has been obtained. The minimum detectable activities have been calculated for 241Am, 133Ba, 235U, 137Cs and 60Co sources depending on transit speed and distance z between the source and the monitor at the maximum approach point. A simple method based on calculated data for choosing optimum signal integration time without measurements of transit speed and distance z has been proposed.
