Summary
In a previous publication (L. Bertanza et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 9 (1962) 180) we reported evidence for the existence of a resonance in the K (which we shall call the PHI meson) with a mass of ~ 1020 and a width < 20 MeV. The purpose of this Letter is to report additional data, the analysis of which confirms the existence of the resonance and provides a conclusive determination of the mass, width, parity, spin, isospin, and branching ratios of this resonance. In particular we find M = 1019 1 MeV, = 1+2-1 (with > 0), parity (P) = -1, spin (J) = 1, isotopic spin (I) = 0, and charge conjugation (C) = -1. The vector nature of the PHI clearly establishes that it is not related to the mass enhancement in the K1 K1 system observed by other groups. (Extracted from the introductory part of the paper.).
